Rachel Curtis participated in the 2010, 24 hour Relay For Life fund raiser for the Cancer Council ACT, held at the AIS athletics track at Bruce.
The ACT Corrective Services Probation and Parole Officer volunteered as part of a relay team that circled the track for 24 hours to support relatives with cancer and to remember other relatives who have succumbed to the disease.
"Cancer has struck and continues to strike my family and I wanted to do something meaningful to fight it," she said
"Relay For Life is an overnight, community event where teams of 10 or more keep a baton moving in a relay-style walk or run," Rachel explains.
"I expect to be mainly walking. That better suits my fitness regime," she adds with a grin.
Born in London, Rachel came to Australia backpacking in her early 20s.
After spending three months in Sydney, she hit Canberra, got into a relationship and decided to stay. That was nine years ago and she has settled nicely.
"I found Canberra so much more personal than my hometown of London and decided this was a good place to be."
Rachel has received considerable support from her Corrections colleagues and with her relay team has exceeded their target of $1000 for the Cancer Council ACT.
